From Almaden and Alviso through Gilroy and Willow Glen, Silicon Valley provides for shopping intrigue both cutting edge and from yesteryear. Sunnyvale -- the "Heart of Silicon Valley" west of San Jose -- boasts a Lace Museum gift shop stocking lace-making supplies for aspiring lace-makers. Palo Alto, birthplace of Hewlett-Packard, also is home to the Barbie Hall of Fame, supported by souvenir t-shirts and postcards.

Once an incorporated city, Willow Glen is now part of San Jose with its own main drag -- Lincoln Avenue -- lined with sidewalk cafes, boutiques, book shops, and home design stores including Yardstick Drapes. Upscale Santana Row reigns as a see-and-be-seen retail scene. Malls abound, including San Jose’s Westgate Mall, San Jose’s Grand Century Shopping Mall, San Jose’s Eastridge Mall, San Jose’s Oakridge Mall, Newark’s New Park Mall, Cupertino’s Vallco Fashion Park, and Santa Clara’s Westfield Shoppingtown-Valley Fair. Silicon Valley’s Great Mall has more than 200 stores including Off 5th Saks Fifth Avenue Outlet and Donna Karan, and Gilroy Premium Outlets has some 145 designer stores.
